COPD Referrals from GP Practice to Community Pharmacy

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. In the UK, there are an estimated 1.2 million people diagnosed with COPD and up to a further 2 million who remain undiagnosed. In the North East and North Cumbria, the prevalence and healthcare costs of COPD are well above the National average. Also, premature mortality rates from COPD in the region are the highest in England.

Two GP practices in Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne, refer patients with COPD to a nominated community pharmacy for medicine use reviews and consultations about new medicine. These services are funded by the NHS and can be more convenient for patients whilst enabling GP time to be used more efficiently. They provide a perfect opportunity for inhaler technique training for those patients who do not bring their inhaler devices to review appointments in the surgery.
