COPD Audit Case Study – Susan Devonport, Bishops Close Medical Practice

COPD is a complex condition, associated with multiple co-morbidities. Anxiety and depression are two of the most common comorbidities, yet often remain undetected and therefore untreated. Unmanaged symptoms undoubtedly increase morbidity, hasten physical disability and increase healthcare utilisation costs. Evidence suggests that screening tools are not routinely used by healthcare professionals and also indicates that many symptoms of depression are often mistaken for those associated with progression of COPD e.g. weight loss, poor sleep pattern and declining physical capabilities.

The aim of this audit was to examine how a general practice approached assessing and addressing the psychological needs of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
