GP Shared Medical Appointments

A shared medical appointment is when multiple patients have an appointment at the same time (typically about 90 minutes in length) with a team of healthcare professionals representing different professions. During a shared appointment participants receive education, participate in group discussion with other patients, and interact with a multi-professional healthcare team. The primary aim of the model is to improve patient health and wellbeing and to empower patient self-management. The additional aims are to increase patient and clinician satisfaction and to reduce waiting times and return rates.

The Respiratory Programme at the AHSN NENC has worked with 3 GP Practices in the East End of Newcastle (St. Anthony’s Health Centre, Heaton Road Surgery and Benfield Park Medical Group) to trial the use of shared medical appointments with COPD patients. Initial feedback is extremely positive

We will be updating this page with news on the outcomes of the trials from the 3 surgeries taking part. Below are some resources that provide further information on shared medical appointments and how they are being adopted in our region.
