Opportunistic Pulse Checks using AliveCor

‘It’s not just heart rate but heart rhythm’

AliveCor is a simple, handheld device developed to assist with opportunistic pulse checks in primary care. Pulse checks can detect people with undiagnosed atrial fibrillation, so they can be identified and treated for their condition.

A number of practices in our region have implemented the AliveCor project as part of the AHSN Atrial Fibrillation programme,

AliveCor provides:

  • A 1-Lead rhythm strip indicating whether the patient has a normal or abnormal heart rhythm using 1 small, simple piece of equipment and a mobile phone device.
  • The flexibility to save and share results by email and download into patients’ notes.
  • Specificity rates up to 97% (compared to 60-70% for traditional methods).
  • Sensitivity rates are above 85%.
  • Potential to increase QoF payments by helping to find patients with atrial fibrillation.
  • 100+ hours of service so no need for charging.

How it works:

  1. Obtain your AliveCor device and protocol by attending a 1.5 hour training session.
  2. Download the app (App Store/Play Store).
  3. Watch the AliveCor training video below and read the protocols document.
