NHS Innovation and Technology Payment 2018/19

14th July 2017

The next round of the NHS England Innovation and Technology Payment (ITP) was launched by NHS England in June, building on the existing Innovation and Technology Tariff (ITT). It will support the NHS to adopt innovation by removing financial or procurement barriers to the uptake of products and technologies, and will be delivered in partnership with the AHSNs, along with other sponsors and national and international experts.

The aim is to enable successful applicants’ innovations (such as medical devices, digital platforms and technologies) to be fast tracked for use in the NHS.

The ITP will be suitable for innovations which have been tested in the NHS and are market ready for systematic spread across the country, with central support to overcome the barriers to wider adoption.
Selection criteria will focus on the strategic fit of the innovation within NHS England priorities (see https://www.england.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/NEXT-STEPS-ON-THE-NHS-FIVE-YEAR-FORWARD-VIEW.pdf and https://www.england.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/nhse-funding-resource-supporting-fyfv.pdf), the contribution to the efficiency challenge (with a return on investment within a year), the evidence base for the innovation and the feasibility of implementing change via the ITP.

The programme is targeted at innovations that can be diffused quickly at low cost.

Any payment, tariff or purchase of products will be available to the NHS from April 2018 for one year, at which point the programme and themes will be reviewed.

The ITP is inviting expressions of interest via NHS England’s Innovation Exchange. Applications open on 17 July and the deadline is noon on 8 September. Please see the link below for more detailed guidance:

Applications are welcomed from people working locally, nationally or internationally in healthcare commissioning and provision, academia, industry and the voluntary sector.
