Introducing Julia Wood, NENC Maternal and Neonatal Health Safety Collaborative Lead

Written by Julia Wood on 31st August 2017

I am delighted to have been appointed by the AHSN NENC as NENC Maternal and Neonatal Health Safety Collaborative Lead.

The Maternal and Neonatal Health Safety Collaborative (MNHSC) is a three-year programme to support improvement in the quality and safety of maternity and neonatal units across England.  The aim is to reduce the rates of maternal deaths, stillbirths, neonatal deaths and brain injuries that occur during or soon after birth by 20% by 2020 and 50% by 2030.

All NHS Trusts (plus independent providers) who provide maternity services in England are required to be involved.  North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust are in Wave 1 from the NENC area, alongside 43 other Trusts nationally.  46 Trusts will be involved in Wave 2 (commencing April 2018), with four being from NENC, and 44 Trusts will be involved in Wave 3 (commencing April 2019), with a further four being from NENC.

Work is already well underway within North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust.  Projects are currently being identified and a North Tees Launch Event is to be held on the 25th August.  They have also had their first site visit from Katie De Freitas, Improvement Manager from NHS Improvement, who will be supporting NENC from a national perspective.

The Academic Health Science Network NENC Patient Safety Collaborative, the Maternity Network at the Northern England Clinical Network, and the Neonatal Network at the Operational Delivery Network have partnered to support the delivery of the MNHSC National Programme across NENC.

There is considerable enthusiasm, not only within North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, but also across NENC about this Collaborative.  It is a great opportunity for organisations locally to not only share and learn from each other, but to also work together to maximise the benefits for mothers, babies and families.

I am very much looking forward to seeing the impact this collaborative will have over the coming months.
