Clinical Lead/s for the Emergency Laparotomy AHSN NENC Regional Programme

Specialist Area: Surgery & Anaesthesia

Base: Region-wide

Value: Up to 2PA per week, per year, for 2 years

Deadline: 15th June 2018

Emergency laparotomy is a major surgical procedure, with 30,000 – 50,000 performed annually in the UK. However, 14.9% of patients die within 30 days of surgery a figure which increases with increasing age. It is a costly procedure too, with over 25% of patients remaining in hospital for more than 20 days after surgery, costing the NHS over £200m a year in ward care. The Academic Health Science Network for North East and North Cumbria (AHSN NENC) is working in partnership with the National Laparotomy Audit team (NELA).  This is a nationally mandated programme with specific requirements but we are also keen to ensure that we meet the needs of our regional member organisations and the STP/ICS.

We are inviting expressions of interest from Clinicians within our region to lead the NENC Emergency Laparotomy Programme for AHSN NENC. We are keen to support either one individual or two individuals. We wish to ensure that the Clinical Champions can bring together all multi-disciplinary stakeholders including surgeons and anaesthetists, radiologists, intensivists and elderly care physicians.  Therefore, if it is better delivered by the appointment of two Clinical Leads with 1PA each this will also be considered.  We will require the individual/s to deliver the following objectives and will provide support via the AHSN to do that.

Objectives

  • To act as a Regional Champion for the Emergency Laparotomy programme for the AHSN NENC.
  • To work with the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit team to develop a regional dashboard to facilitate real time quality improvement activity
  • To oversee the content of a regional launch event for the NENC Emergency Laparotomy programme in partnership with NELA and QI methodologists and a subsequent series of masterclasses if considered appropriate.
  • To lead, deliver, develop and evaluate specific Emergency Laparotomy projects in NENC as required by the national AHSN network
  • To manage, strategically lead and co-ordinate the Emergency Laparotomy programme for AHSN NENC
  • To use innovation, quality improvement and clinical audit to support effective patient outcomes, safety and experience aligned with the Academic Health Science Network and national agenda.
  • To liaise with the National Emergency Laparotomy team and to represent AHSN NENC when required.

Accountable to: Medical Director AHSN NENC.

You can find out more about the Emergency Laparotomy Collaborative on the AHSN Network Atlas website.

Please submit your proposal in no more than one side of A4 that defines how you would deliver the programme, approaches you would take, and whether you would lead as a individual or as a team.

Permission to apply from your Clinical Director and that you have capacity in your job plan to accommodate the PA will be required.

Deadline 15th June 2018
